LM317 variable Power supply Wiring diagram Schematic

Description:
A truly timeless schema. LM317 is a versatile and highly efficient 1.2-37V voltage regulator that can provide up to 1.5A of current with a large heat sink. Its ideal for just about any application. This was my first workbench power supply and I still use it.

Since LM317 is protected against short-schema, no fuse is necessary. Thanks to automatic thermal shutdown, it will turn off if heating excessively. All in all, a very powerful (and affordable!) package, indeed.

Although LM317 is capable of delivering up to 37V, the schema pictured here is limited to 25V for the sake of safety and simplicity. Any higher output voltage would require additional components and a larger heat sink.

Make sure that the input voltage is at least a couple of Volts higher than the desired output. Its ok to use a trimmer if youre building a fixed-voltage supply.

Problems:
Follow all the safety precautions when working with mains voltage. Insulate all connections on the transformer.

Possible uses:
Variable workbench power supply, fixed-voltage supply... Just about any possible application when no more than 1.5A is necessary.

LM317 to create constant current of 2mA

I have a schema where I want to have a constant current of 2mA through a variable resistor. Ive been told that I could probably use a LM317 as a current regulator, with one resistor on the ouput. But Ive read some places that the LM317 takes minimum 5-10mA load to function correctly.

How can I achieve a constant current output of 2mA when I dont know the resistance of the variable resistor?

The input voltage is about 2.755V. Output voltage doesnt matter, just the current.

The LM317 with the single series resistor between output and adjust input is actually a fixed current source, not a current limiter. You dont need the LM317 to create a current limiter, a few discrete components will do:

For a limiting at 2mA you select a 330Ω resistor for RSENSE. If there flows 2mA through it Q2 will start to conduct and reduce the base voltage of Q1, so that its current is cut off.

Maybe youre focusing too much on the LM317. If you need a constant current you could use the LM234 which is a programmable current source for up to 10mA. You set the current with a resistor.

Build a Car Voltage Regulator Circuit Using LM317

The car cigarette lighter socket does not only light cigarettes, but can be utilized as an electrical channel for powering tools to work on the car such as laptops and other electronic devices. The following schema diagram shows a way of powering a two-way mobile radio using the LM317T voltage regulator.

The LM317T is an adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage regulator that efficiently provides a load current of 1.5 Amps over an output range of 1.2 V and 37 V. With reference to the schema, it can accept 14 volts without any hassle and the voltage can be controlled easily with the use of a potentiometer, a 3-terminal resister with sliding contact. The whole schema will contain the following components:


 Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
Resistor 1 (R1): 270 ohms
Resistor 2 (R2): 2K carbon potentiometer
Capacitor 1 (C1): 100nF
Capacitor 2 (C2): 1uF tantalum
LM317T Voltage Regulator
Heat Sink
DC Power Jacks
Green LED: Power
Red LED: Over Voltage
Zener Diode: over voltage LED switch

The zener diode switches on the over voltage LED if the voltage passing through is larger than the breakdown or preset voltage. The use of zener diode permits a constant amount of voltage and can be very beneficial for devices that inputs the same amount of voltage.

LM317T is cheaply available in the market and is very simple to integrate into several energy system to supply a maximum current or voltage.
